Cllr MacLaren condemns £120m wasted on Brexit Festival

“This is a complete waste of money that could be used to help the victims of Tory policies, such as those that have to queue up at foodbanks to feed themselves and their families,” said Councillor Kenny MacLaren (SNP – Paisley Northwest) commenting on the Tory Government’s plans to spend £120million ‘celebrating’ Brexit.

Planned for 2022, the UK Tory Government has confirmed that the former director of the London Olympics ceremony, Martin Green will receive a budget of £120million for a national festival to mark the UK finally leaving the EU.

Councillor Kenny MacLaren said:

“The Scottish Government is spending around £100 million per year to offset the worst of the Tory austerity cuts yet Boris Johnson has put aside £120million to celebrate Brexit!

“Apparently the UK Government is planning to ask local authorities what they would like to do to celebrate Brexit – maybe ditching the Tory’s austerity agenda such as the bedroom tax, the rape clause and bringing back a social security system which supports rather than penalising those in need would help, but this would take more than the £120million they plan to spend waving union jacks to celebrate Britain’s isolation from the EU.

“Every study has shown that the UK, and Scotland in particular, is going to suffer under Brexit – companies will move jobs to the EU, there are concerns about shortages of medicines and foodstuffs and the economy will take a massive hit – there is nothing to celebrate about Brexit.

“In 2014 the Tories told Scottish voters the only way to stay in the EU was to vote NO – yet now we are being dragged out of the EU even though 62% of Scottish voters wanted to remain within it. The choice is clear – if we want to be in the EU we have to reclaim our independence from London, we need a second Independence Referendum now!”
