“We need to protect ourselves, our families and our communities from the Coronavirus (Covid -19) and the best way to do that is to ignore the comments from the UK’s political dumb and dumber of Boris Johnston and his aide Dominic Cummings and instead listen to what Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon is telling you what to do”, said Councillor Kenny MacLaren (SNP – Paisley Northwest).
The recent disgraceful actions of the Prime Minister’s chief aide Dominic Cummings where he broke the lockdown legislation by leaving his London home and driving himself and his family (while potentially infected with Covid -19) to Durham put many people at risk. His further actions of going on a 60 mile round trip to a local tourist spot created further problems. In attempting to explain why he broke the law, Mr Cummings actually breached the rules surrounding special advisers by holding a press conference!
Councillor Kenny MacLaren added:
“The disgraceful behaviour of Dominic Cummings and the Prime Minister for backing him, clearly shows there is one rule for the elite and another for the rest of us.
“There were already concerns about the Prime Ministers confused ideas about moving out of lockdown that many people were worried that a second spike in Covid -19 cases would happen. So far at least one hospital in England has been overwhelmed by Covid -19 cases and has had to close it A&E department, while there is apparently a rise in Covid-19 cases in England from the last couple of weeks.
“There have been reports of street parties to celebrate VE day and a complete disregard of physical distancing rules at English seaside resorts that a second spike is almost inevitable. Add to this Mr Cummings breach of the rules, supported by the Prime Minister, and its likely more people will think why should they obey such rules if Cummings can choose to ignore them!
“That’s why it is important to remember that Scotland’s rules are dictated by the Scottish Government. Nicola Sturgeon is taking a more cautious approach, trying to ensure the rate of infection is reducing before gradually opening up the Scottish economy. If we follow her example we should be able to get the economy working without risking so many lives. However, if the Scottish Government guidance is ignored, there is a danger that we will have to impose stronger restrictions and it will take longer to get everyone back to work, school, college etc.
“My message is simple, ignore the misguided comments from Boris and Cummings and listen only to Nicola Sturgeon and her team on how best to work our way through this current crisis.”
