“I would urge local residents to go online and fill in the consultation, this will help inform policy in an area that affects so many people – particularly over the festive period,” said Councillor Kenny MacLaren (SNP – Paisley Northwest), highlighting a Scottish Government consultation on the Fireworks and Pyrotechnics Bill at Holyrood.
The consultation follows the response of an independent working group on fireworks, which recommended tightening legislation to reduce the harm fireworks cause.
Councillor Kenny MacLaren added:
“The Scottish Government consulted on fireworks in 2019 and the results were clear that this is an important issue.
“That’s why this eight-week consultation will ask members of the public to share their views on a new proposed criminal offence around carrying pyrotechnics devices – such as fireworks – in public spaces without justifiable cause.
“In addition to this, people can give their thoughts on extending the powers of the police to be able to stop and search in relation to fireworks and pyrotechnics, as well as around making it illegal for an adult to supply fireworks to a person under the age of 18.
“I’m pleased that what is being proposed here takes concerns expressed by many people on board. Fireworks can be a great way to add to celebrations, but they can also cause misery for other residents, pets, livestock, and wildlife.”
